Workshops Offered:
Veil (3 hours)
Veil Workshop - All Levels
The true essence of Middle Eastern dance is reached when an accomplished dancer has total control over every muscle, both large and small, in her body, and uses this ability to interpret all the nuisances of the music. Dancing with a veil adds a new and exciting dimension to this interpretation. The veil is your dance partner, an extension of your dance. Dancing with the veil is an art to which strong foundations in belly dance and imagination play the most important role in mastering. In Majida’s workshop, you will learn how to use your veil to its fullest capacity through various combinations and choreography, and also how to explore your own interpretations of the music with veil.
Double Veil (1 hour in conjunction with veil workshop)
Shimmy Workshop (3 hours) **NEW**
Known for her intricate hip articulation, Majida has developed a shimmy workshop aimed to be a useful building block for dancers. Most belly dancers have trouble with shimmies because of two reasons: hip articulation and knowledgeable execution. Majida Anwar’s shimmy workshop breaks down the elusive shimmy into three sections: levels, counting, and specialty shimmies. These categories explore the different types of shimmies and how they relate to one another. Students can expect to sharpen their hip articulation immensely through this three-hour “learn and drill” workshop and strengthen their shimmy skills to open up opportunities for cleaner layering technique.
Oriental Choreography (4 Hours)
Each choreoraphy workshop is broken down into 2 hours of technique and combinations and 2 hours of learning the choreography.
Esma Alli - Intermediate Oriental Choreography - Watch the video here!
Sahra Saiidi - Intermediate Oriental Choreography
This choreography was originally written for Majida Anwar and her sister, Alyse. The choreography is very fun and up beat, with a little sibling rivalry thrown in! The piece can be learned as a duet or for an entire troupe.
Saiidi Cane - Intermediate
The Saiidi cane workshop includes historical and cultural learnings of Raqs al Saiidi plus a short Oriental routine including folkloric steps as well as sassy, modern combinations.
Zill Drill and Rhythms Teaser (4 Hours)
The Zill and Rhythms workshop helps students become better accustomed to playing with zills. The workshop also incorporates 5 to 6 major rhythms used in Middle Eastern dance and how to play these rhythms on the zills. Students are then given a short combo choreography to help identify proper movements to each rhythm. Majida will teach the rhythms on the tabla and will play during class for the choreography brain teasers.
