Beginning “The Building Blocks” 6:45 – 7:45 PM

In this class, students will be introduced to the building blocks of belly dance. The topics in this class are the most important for any beginning student to know, and what any intermediate and above dancer to strive to perfect. No matter the style, the basics are the basics. As an artist, dancers must have a strong grasp on these building blocks to create your own artistic voice. This class will help you grow as a dancer, no matter your style. Each class will explore a specific concept integral to your foundation as a dancer. This class is perfect for the student who wants to be introduced to the art, break a sweat, find your inner goddess, or to just have fun with your friends.

Intermediate “Zills and Rhythms” 7:45 – 8:45 PM

In this class, students will be introduced to the wonderful art of finger cymbals! An essential skill for tribal and cabaret dancers, this class will introduce finger cymbal technique as well as basic Middle Eastern rhythms that are played on the finger cymbals. Each class will focus on 1 or 2 rhythms with a combination to reinforce concepts with each rhythm. Students must purchase zills for the class. I recommend the Arabesque zills from Harry Saroyan http://www.saroyanzils.com

Advanced “Musicality and Layering” 8:45 – 9:45 PM

This is a survey class of different topics not only specific to the dance, but also the culture and music that surrounds it. Music theory and musicality are absolutely integral to the complete dancer. Majida Anwar has over 10 years of classical music training and training in the Arabic maqam on the violin. Each class will explore a unique topic not to be missed, complete with combinations to reinforce the day’s topic. In addition to music, we will explore folkloric styling, advanced layering (including Majida Anwar's signature shimmy layering), and approaches to improvisation and choreography.
